History and Political Science

Offered as a major
Division Level
Undergraduate

The primary mission of the History and Political Science major is both to introduce students to historical knowledge and methodology and to provide them understanding of political ideas and ideologies, as well as the working of political processes and institutions.

The required history courses focus on American, European, and World History. The required political science courses provide students the rare opportunity to read books in the Great Books tradition (classical and modern), other primary source material in the discipline and landmark Supreme Court decisions.

The major prepares students for graduate or professional study in history, political science, and related disciplines. In addition to acquiring the discipline’s content knowledge and academic skills, history and political science majors examine the development of personality, community, and spirituality in different contexts. They acquire habits of the mind that lead to life-long learning.
